Why visit

The karst gorge between Guilin and Yangshuo is the landscape the postcards are made from, and the river is the only way to see it end to end.

The boat handles transport and sightseeing at once: you arrive in Yangshuo in the early afternoon without a separate transfer.

The ¥20 note view is a real five-minute stretch of the route — a small pleasure, but people genuinely enjoy finding it.

How to get there

  • Included transfer — Most tickets include a bus from city hotels to the pier. Confirm the pickup time and the pier the evening before, and keep the voucher on your phone offline.
  • Independent — A taxi to the pier without the transfer is possible but rarely cheaper once you return for luggage; the transfer is normally worth taking.

Before you go

  • Deck space is shared: if you want the front of the top deck, board early rather than standing up the whole way.
  • Food on board is basic; eat before boarding and buy water at the pier.

Best time and crowds

  • Spring mist makes the most atmospheric photographs but also the most delays.
  • Summer holidays and National Day are the busiest; book early and expect a full boat.
  • Winter is cheap and quiet, with lower water and bare hills.

In-depth guide

Written and fact-checked for this page; the data modules above stay the source of truth for hours, tickets and reservations.

"The Li River" is not one product. There is a four-hour cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, a set of shorter raft routes around Yangdi and Xingping, and two or three other sectional boat routes, and they do not start from the same place, cost the same thing, or give you the same day. Choosing between them is the actual decision. Booking is the second decision, and it has a wrinkle: the official channel is a WeChat service account, not a website checkout.

We re-checked the scenic area's fare table, transport table and hotline list on 2 November 2026, and added the 2026 ticket rules and the English hotline. The fares below are the published table, and the table's own timestamp is 14 June 2024 — we could not confirm a later revision of it, so the numbers may have moved since. The pier information is written the way the official pages write it, and no further.

Why visit

The stretch between Guilin and Yangshuo is the karst landscape the region is known for: limestone peaks rising straight out of flat farmland, a river bending between them, villages at the waterline. The cruise is the way to see it end to end in one go, and it doubles as transport — you get off in Yangshuo in the early afternoon, which is where most people want to be next anyway.

The scenic area's own route description points out the landmarks you will pass: Nine Horses Fresco Hill (九马画山), Yellow Cloth Shoal (黄布倒影), and the view printed on the CNY 20 note. That last one is a five-minute stretch rather than a destination, and people enjoy finding it precisely because it is so ordinary on the ground.

The rafts are a different experience, not a cheaper version of the same one. They run on shorter sections around Yangdi and Chaobanshan, closer to the water, and they let you see the same landscape in two hours instead of four. If your reason for being on the river is the scenery, both work. If your reason is to get from Guilin to Yangshuo, that is the cruise's job — the rafts stay in their own section.

Three practical notes. The 3-star and 4-star cruises run the same river; the difference is the boat and the seating, not the view. The raft fares are per section, so the number you see on a board is not automatically the trip you have in mind — check the section before you pay. And the fares above come from the official table dated 14 June 2024, which splits each cruise fare into a CNY 54 scenic-area ticket and a boat fare — the CNY 54 is what you will be asked for first at the window.

Book first, then plan the bus

Everything in the next section about buses is the second half of the plan. The first half is the booking, and on this river the order matters: the piers basically do not sell same-day boat tickets, so a bus ride out to a pier is not a plan for getting on a boat.

Three things the scenic area published in autumn 2026 make the sequence concrete.

The sale windows. A notice dated 16 September 2026 says the National Day holiday stock for the highlight cruise — and for the return cruise via Yangdi — went on presale 15 days ahead, while rafts, sectional cruises and the Fishing Village route opened 7 days ahead. Take those as the windows published for that holiday period rather than as a permanent rule, and check the current one in the account before you fix a date.

The restock times. The same notice, and the ticket-warning notice of 1 October 2026, both say remaining tickets are refreshed at 11:00 and 16:00 daily. If your date reads sold out, that is when to look again.

The only channel is the official WeChat service account 「漓江售票处」. The October notice is blunt about the alternative: the piers basically do not sell same-day tickets, only a few cancelled seats are resold, and visitors without a booking are told not to come and wait at the pier.

Then the sentence that changes how you plan the morning. Passengers who hold a booking should reach the pier ahead of their booked departure, because a missed slot means you cannot board — 逾期将无法登船, in the 1 October notice. Do not treat the 8:30 bus as a comfortable margin for a 9:00 sailing: the bus and the boat run on two different timetables, and only one of them waits.

That notice also warns that roadside sellers and unofficial "internal ticket" or queue-jumping offers are not real, and suggests re-dating the trip or switching to a city-section or sectional route if your date is gone.

Which pier, and how to actually get there

The piers are outside Guilin, and both the cruise and the raft sections start from places with no useful address for a taxi app. Two things are worth knowing before you plan the morning.

Confirm the pier with the operator. The official pages do not tell you which pier your boat uses. The fare table writes the departure point for the highlight cruise as 「磨盘山(竹江)」, one expression, on the line shared by the 3-star and the 4-star fare, and the boat pages for each star grade describe cabins and service without naming a port. Ask when you book, and ask again before you arrange a transfer — and do not pick your bus or your hotel on the assumption that a star grade decides the port. Port numbers are on the hotline page below.

Both ports are served by the same bus. The scenic area publishes a custom bus route (定制公交) that runs from the Tiexi depot area through Guilin station (the 100 bus stand), Xicheng intersection, Cross Street (by the book-city footbridge) and Sanlidiao Square to the Zhujiang and Mopanshan passenger ports, with departures at 7:00, 7:20, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00 and 10:30. A second custom coach (定制客运) starts at Guilin's north bus station and runs via Beiji Square, the central square and the old bus station to the same two ports, at 7:00 and 8:00. Zhujiang also has city bus 9, 7:00–8:30, every 30 minutes. Coming back, a dedicated coach leaves Yangshuo's Longtoushan pier at 14:50 and 16:10 for both ports.

Two caveats on those times, because a timetable is the easiest thing on a travel page to over-trust. All of these connections assume you already hold a ticket for a specific sailing — a bus ride to the port gets you to a gate, not onto a boat. The table gives no seasonal qualifier — which suggests these are ordinary services rather than peak-season extras, but it does not say they run every day of the year, and it does not say whether seats need booking in advance. Treat the times as the published plan and confirm the morning you travel (0773-3860887 for the custom bus, 0773-8811669 for the return coach).

For the Yangdi and Xingping sections there are local links: Xingping high-speed rail station to Xingping pier, and connections at Yangdi pier to Guilin station or Yangshuo, timed around the boats' arrival rather than a fixed timetable.

If your ticket includes a transfer, confirm the pickup time and the pier the evening before, and keep the voucher available offline — mobile signal at the piers is not something to plan around.

When to go, and how crowded it gets

The timetable is the weakest part of the public information, and it is worth separating two different things: the bus times above are published, while the boats' departure times are not. The official site does not publish sailing times; they are assigned when you book, so do not build a plan around a boat you assume leaves at nine. Ask in the service account when you book, and treat that answer as the schedule.

Peak season changes the lead time: the official route notes say to book at least one day ahead in peak season. The capacity figures explain why that matters. The scenic area publishes a daily maximum of 124,600 visitors, with 55,800 in the sightseeing zone. Per pier, the Xingping cruise pier is capped at 11,360 per day and 950 people at any one moment — the smallest instantaneous number of the piers listed, which is the number that decides whether you wait on a pontoon.

The practical reading of those numbers: the capacity exists, but the popular sections and the popular boats fill, and a same-day decision in high season is a gamble. Book a day or more out, take an early boat if the choice is yours, and keep the rest of the day loose.

Building the day around a one-way river

The single fact that shapes everything else is that the cruise does not come back. You board in Guilin in the morning, get off in Yangshuo early in the afternoon, and whatever you planned for the evening has to happen in Yangshuo. That is a feature if you are staying the night there, and a problem if your luggage is still in Guilin.

Three ways to make the geometry work. The clean version: sleep in Guilin, take the morning cruise, stay one night in Yangshuo, and travel back the next day. The fast version: take the cruise out, keep the afternoon in Yangshuo, and take the official return coach — but that return runs twice in the afternoon, so the boat's arrival time decides whether it is realistic. The third version: skip the full cruise, base yourself in Yangshuo, and do a sectional raft on the Yangdi or Chaobanshan stretch, which returns you to the same pier and leaves the rest of the day intact.

Whichever you pick, keep the return leg concrete before you board. The coach is the part people leave vague, and it is the one with a timetable you cannot change.

If the booking channel defeats you

This is the one part of the trip where being a foreign visitor costs you real time, so keep the phone numbers. The scenic area publishes a Foreigner ticket service hotline, 19167711091 (外国人购票专线), and it is the line to try when the WeChat service account will not take a passport or the payment will not go through. Behind it: Mopanshan port 0773-3900890, Zhujiang port 0773-3909230, Xingping pier 0773-8701158, scenic-area enquiries 0773-8996303, and the Gaoxin ticket office 0773-8287688 — that last number is a ticket counter, not an English-language line, whatever the English version of the site implies.

FAQ

Can I book a Li River cruise online?

The official website has no checkout. Tickets are sold through the WeChat service account 「漓江售票处」, and some online orders are refundable under their product terms. Set up WeChat and a payment method before you arrive; if the passport is the problem, call 19167711091.

Which pier do I leave from?

Confirm which pier your boat uses with the operator before you arrange transport. The fare table does not map star grades to ports: it names Mopanshan and Zhujiang as one starting point, 「磨盘山(竹江)」, for both the 3-star and the 4-star cruise, and the star-grade boat pages name no port. Both ports are reached by the same custom bus, so the transfer works the same either way. Port numbers: Mopanshan 0773-3900890, Zhujiang 0773-3909230.

How much does it cost?

CNY 215 in a 3-star boat and CNY 360 in a 4-star boat on the official fare table, each split into a CNY 54 scenic-area ticket and the boat fare. Raft sections run from CNY 115 to CNY 255. The table is dated 14 June 2024 and we could not confirm a later revision, so check the service account when you book. There is no published 5-star fare.

Where does the cruise end, and how do I get back to Guilin?

It ends in Yangshuo. The official return coach runs from Yangshuo Longtoushan pier at 14:50 and 16:10 to Mopanshan and Zhujiang piers. Outside those two departures, the return is your own arrangement.

Do I need ID, and is a passport accepted?

Yes — tickets are real-name and boarding checks that ticket, person and ID match. The official wording is "valid ID" without listing documents, so a passport is normally fine; confirm when you book.

Can I bring luggage or a pet?

No. There is no luggage storage on board and pets are not allowed. The cruise is one-way, so plan what you carry for the whole day.

How far ahead should I book, and what happens if I change my mind?

The official route notes ask for at least one day's notice in peak season. Refunds run through the channel you booked with: a paper ticket has to be cancelled at the pier ticket office at least 10 minutes before departure, and an uncollected online order is refunded under that product's terms, with fees. Decide before the boat leaves, because the crossing does not come back.

What most guides don't tell you

  • Booking comes before transport, not after it: the piers basically do not sell same-day boat tickets, and the 1 October 2026 notice tells visitors without a reservation not to come and wait at the pier. The bus timetable below only matters once you hold a sailing.
  • The fare table splits every price into a scenic-area ticket plus the boat or raft fare — CNY 54 + CNY 161 for the 3-star cruise, CNY 54 + CNY 306 for the 4-star. That is why the number on a pier board does not match the number a tout quotes.
  • In that same table the 3-star and 4-star cruises sit on one line, with one departure point written as 「磨盘山(竹江)」, and the star-grade boat pages name no port at all. Nothing on the official pages assigns a pier to a fare or a star grade — confirm it with the operator before you book a transfer.
  • The 5-star cruise has no fare in the public price table. Its own page describes cabins and service and gives no price, so a 5-star quote is something you ask for, not something you look up.
  • Both piers are served by the same custom bus (定制公交) from Guilin: 7:00, 7:20, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00 and 10:30, plus a north-station line at 7:00 and 8:00. Zhujiang also has city bus 9, 7:00–8:30, every 30 minutes.
  • The official contact page carries a Foreigner ticket service hotline, 19167711091, filed next to the Chinese numbers. It is the number to call about a passport booking — and it is not the 0773-8287688 that the English site leaves you with, which is a ticket counter.
  • The official return coach from Yangshuo Longtoushan pier runs twice, at 14:50 and 16:10. Miss both and the return is yours to arrange.
  • Departure times of the boats are not published anywhere — they are assigned when you book. The bus times above are published; the sailing times are not.
  • The Xingping cruise pier has an instantaneous cap of 950 people. That number, not the daily total, is what you feel when boats stack up.

Questions

Is the Li River cruise worth the money?

If you want the four-hour scenic version, yes. If you are short on time or on a tight budget, take the bus to Yangshuo and do a shorter raft trip on the Yulong River instead.

Which pier does the cruise leave from?

Zhujiang and Mopanshan are the two main piers outside Guilin, and the official price list names them as one starting point (Mopanshan/Zhujiang). Confirm which pier your boat uses with the operator before arranging transport.

Where does the cruise end?

At Yangshuo, in the early afternoon. Most people stay there rather than return to Guilin the same day.
